Other Features And Applications
Harvesting of Ladies Finger or Okra or Bhendi : Flowering begins from 35 to 40 days after sowing. The crop is harvested in 55 to 65 days after planting when pods are 2 to 3 inches long. …

1. Soil Preparation:

  • Okra thrives in well-drained, fertile soil with good organic matter. Prepare the soil by adding compost or well-rotted organic matter to improve its fertility and moisture retention.
  • Aim for a soil pH level of around 6.0 to 7.0, which is slightly acidic to neutral.

2. Seed Sowing:

  • Start Bhindi seeds indoors about 4-6 weeks before the last expected frost date in your area. Alternatively, you can sow seeds directly in the garden once the soil has warmed up.
  • Plant the seeds about 1/2 inch deep and space them 2-3 inches apart in rows or hills. If planting in rows, space the rows about 2-3 feet apart.
  • Water the soil lightly after sowing the seeds.

3. Transplanting Seedlings (if started indoors):

  • If you started your Bhindi seeds indoors, transplant the seedlings into the garden once they have grown to about 3-4 inches tall and have at least two true leaves.
  • Space the seedlings about 12-18 inches apart in rows.

4. Watering:

  • Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Okra plants prefer even moisture, so water regularly, especially during dry spells.
  • Avoid overhead watering to prevent the development of fungal diseases.

5. Fertilization:

  • Okra is a moderately heavy feeder. You can incorporate a balanced granular fertilizer into the soil before planting and then side-dress with additional fertilizer during the growing season.
  • Be careful not to over-fertilize, as excessive nitrogen can lead to lush foliage at the expense of fruit production.

6. Mulching:

  • Apply a layer of organic mulch, such as straw or compost, around the okra plants to help retain soil moisture, regulate soil temperature, and suppress weeds.

7. Support (Optional):

  • While Bhindi plants are generally self-supporting, you can provide stakes or cages if you want to keep the plants upright and make harvesting easier.

8. Pest and Disease Control:

  • Monitor your okra plants for common pests like aphids, spider mites, and stink bugs. Use organic pest control methods if necessary.
  • Watch for diseases like powdery mildew and leaf spot and take preventive measures like proper spacing and good garden hygiene.

9. Harvesting:

  • Bhindi is ready for harvest about 50-60 days after planting. Harvest the pods when they are 2-4 inches long, as larger pods can become tough and fibrous.
  • Use a sharp knife or scissors to cut the pods from the plant, being careful not to damage the main stem.
