Other Features And Applications Dianthus flowers (Dianthus spp.) are also called “pinks.” They belong to a family of plants which includes carnations, and are characterized by the spicy fragrance the blooms emit.Dianthus bloom best with at least six hours of full sun, but can tolerate partial shade, particularly in the warmest zones. Bloom time: Spring to early summer; some rebloom intermittently or continuously through summer and fall.
- Timing: Dianthus can be sown outdoors in the spring after the last frost date or started indoors 6-8 weeks before the last expected frost date in your area.
- Prepare Containers: Use seed-starting trays or small pots with good drainage holes. Fill the containers with a well-draining seed-starting mix or a blend of potting soil, sand, and perlite.
- Sow Seeds: Sprinkle the Dianthus seeds over the soil surface, as they require light to germinate. Avoid covering the seeds with soil; simply press them gently into the surface of the soil.
- Watering: Moisten the soil gently with water after sowing the seeds. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged until the seeds germinate.
- Germination: Place the seed trays or pots in a warm location with bright, indirect sunlight. Dianthus seeds usually germinate within 10-20 days.
- Transplanting: Once the seedlings have developed two to three true leaves and are large enough to handle, they can be transplanted into larger containers or directly into the garden. If transplanting outdoors, ensure the last frost date has passed.
- Outdoor Planting: Choose a sunny spot in your garden with well-draining soil. Dianthus prefers full sunlight for best flowering. Space the transplants at least 8-12 inches apart to give them enough room to grow.
- Soil and Fertilizer: Dianthus thrives in well-draining, slightly alkaline soil. Adding some compost or well-rotted organic matter before planting can help improve the soil structure. Fertilize sparingly with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Watering: While Dianthus is relatively drought-tolerant once established, it’s essential to keep the young transplants watered during dry periods until they establish strong root systems.
- Deadheading: To encourage continuous blooming and prevent the plant from putting energy into seed production, deadhead spent flowers regularly by removing them at the base.
- Winter Care: In colder climates, Dianthus can be susceptible to winter damage. Applying a layer of mulch around the plants in late fall can help insulate the roots and protect them from severe cold.
