Other Features And Applications To grow nemesia in a pot, use good potting soil mixed with a little sand, perlite, or vermiculite to encourage draining. The soil should be slightly acidic. If using garden soil, add compost and check the pH to ensure some acidity. Nemesia in planters requires six to seven hours per day of full sun.
- Timing: Nemesia is typically grown as an annual in most climates. Start sowing the seeds indoors 8 to 10 weeks before the last expected frost date in your area. This will give the seedlings enough time to grow and become established before transplanting them outdoors.
- Soil Preparation: Use a well-draining seed starting mix or potting soil to fill small containers or seed trays. Nemesia prefers slightly acidic to neutral soil (pH around 6.0 to 7.0). Avoid using heavy garden soil, as it may lead to poor germination and seedling growth.
- Sowing Seeds: Scatter the nemesia seeds on the soil surface and gently press them into the soil. Since nemesia seeds are tiny, you can mix them with fine sand to help distribute them evenly. Do not cover the seeds with soil, as they require light to germinate.
- Watering: After sowing the seeds, water the containers gently using a misting spray or a watering can with a fine rose to avoid disturbing the seeds. Keep the soil consistently moist until germination occurs.
- Germination: Nemesia seeds usually germinate within 1 to 2 weeks. The ideal soil temperature for germination is around 65-75°F (18-24°C).
- Transplanting: Once the seedlings have developed a few sets of true leaves and are large enough to handle, carefully transplant them into individual pots. Be gentle with the delicate roots while transplanting.
- Outdoor Planting: After the danger of frost has passed and the seedlings have been hardened off, you can transplant them into their final location in the garden or containers. Nemesia prefers full sun to partial shade, so choose a spot that receives at least 6 hours of sunlight per day.
- Spacing: Space the nemesia plants according to the growth habit of the variety you’re growing, typically about 8 to 12 inches (20 to 30 cm) apart, to allow enough room for them to grow and spread.
- Watering and Care: Nemesia prefers consistently moist soil but can handle short periods of drought once established. Avoid overwatering, as it can lead to root rot. Mulching around the plants can help retain soil moisture and suppress weeds.
- Fertilization: Use a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer according to the manufacturer’s instructions to promote healthy growth and flowering. Apply the fertilizer every 4 to 6 weeks during the growing season.
- Deadheading: To encourage continuous blooming, remove faded flowers regularly.
