Other Features And ApplicationsA very beautiful perennial with an abundant blooming for the most part of the year, osteospermum is also a very easy plant to grow and it resists most diseases very well. If you are growing osteospermum in containers use a potting soil mix. Water the plants whenever the soil feels dry.
- Timing: Osteospermum is a tender perennial or annual, depending on the climate. In colder regions, it’s grown as an annual, while in warmer climates, it can be grown as a perennial. Start sowing the seeds indoors 8 to 10 weeks before the last expected frost date in your area, or you can sow them directly outdoors after the danger of frost has passed.
- Soil Preparation: Use a well-draining seed starting mix or potting soil to fill small containers or seed trays if you are starting the seeds indoors. If planting outdoors, ensure the soil is well-draining and fertile.
- Sowing Seeds Indoors: Scatter the Osteospermum seeds on the soil surface, as they require light to germinate. Press the seeds gently into the soil to ensure good contact but avoid burying them too deep. You can mix the seeds with fine sand to help distribute them evenly.
- Watering: After sowing the seeds, water the containers gently using a misting spray or a watering can with a fine rose to avoid disturbing the seeds. Keep the soil consistently moist until germination occurs.
- Germination: Osteospermum seeds usually germinate within 1 to 2 weeks. Maintain a temperature of about 65-75°F (18-24°C) for better germination.
- Transplanting: Once the seedlings have developed a few sets of true leaves and are large enough to handle, carefully transplant them into individual pots if you started them indoors. Be gentle with the delicate roots while transplanting.
- Outdoor Planting: If you sowed the seeds directly outdoors, thin out the seedlings to the recommended spacing once they have grown a few inches tall. Osteospermum plants prefer full sun to light shade, so choose a spot that receives at least 6 hours of sunlight per day.
- Spacing: Space the Osteospermum plants about 12 to 18 inches (30 to 45 cm) apart to allow enough room for them to grow and spread.
- Watering and Care: Water the seedlings or young plants regularly to keep the soil consistently moist until they establish themselves. Once established, Osteospermum is relatively drought-tolerant but will benefit from occasional watering during dry spells.
- Fertilization: Use a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer according to the manufacturer’s instructions to promote healthy growth and flowering. Apply the fertilizer every 4 to 6 weeks during the growing season.
- Deadheading: To encourage continuous blooming, consider deadheading (removing faded flowers) regularly.
- Winter Care: In colder climates, Osteospermum may not survive the winter outdoors. You can treat it as an annual and replant new seeds the following year or attempt to overwinter it indoors in a cool and well-lit area.
