Gardening in grow bags is a simple way to begin gardening almost anywhere. Pick up a few bags, fill them with soil, and you’re ready to go.
For a nursery bag that is 4 inches high and 4 inches wide, you can still grow small plants effectively.
1. Choose the Right Soil
Use a lightweight potting mix that retains moisture but drains well. You can mix it with perlite or coconut coir for better aeration.
2. Select Small Plants
Opt for small plants like herbs (basil, parsley), flowers (marigolds, pansies), or small succulents. Avoid larger plants that need more space.
3. Prepare the Bag
Ensure the nursery bag has drainage holes to prevent water accumulation.
4. Fill the Bag with Soil
Fill the bag to about 1 inch from the top with potting mix. This allows space for watering.
5. Planting
Create small holes for seeds or seedlings. For seeds, follow the recommended spacing; for seedlings, one per bag is ideal.
6. Watering
Water the plants gently after planting. Keep the soil moist but not soggy.
7. Light Requirements
Place the nursery bag in a bright area with plenty of indirect sunlight. Most small plants prefer 4-6 hours of light daily.
8. Fertilizing
Use a diluted liquid fertilizer every few weeks, following the instructions on the label.
9. Monitor for Pests and Diseases
Keep an eye out for pests or signs of disease. Address any issues quickly.
10. Harvesting (if applicable)
If growing herbs, you can start harvesting once the plants are big enough.
With careful selection and attention, you can grow thriving plants in your small nursery bag!
