Tagetes erecta, the Aztec marigold, Mexican marigold, big marigold, cempazúchitl or cempasúchil, is a species of flowering plant in the genus Tagetes native to Mexico. Despite its being native to the Americas, it is often called African marigold.
Other Features And Applications African marigold plants propagate easily from seed started indoors 4-6 weeks before last frost date or sown directly in the garden after all danger of frost has passed. Seeds usually germinate in 4-14 days. African marigold plants can also be purchased at most garden centers in the spring .
- Timing: African Marigolds are warm-season flowers, so sow the seeds after the danger of frost has passed and the soil has warmed up. In most regions, this is usually in the spring when temperatures are consistently above freezing.
- Soil Preparation: African Marigolds prefer well-draining soil with moderate fertility. Prepare the soil by removing any weeds and rocks. You can work in some organic compost or well-rotted manure to improve soil structure and provide nutrients.
- Sowing Seeds: Choose a sunny location for planting. Sow the African Marigold seeds about 1/4 inch (6 mm) deep and 12 to 18 inches (30 to 45 cm) apart. You can plant them in rows or clusters for a more dramatic effect.
- Watering: After sowing the seeds, water the area gently to settle the soil around the seeds. Keep the soil consistently moist until the seeds germinate.
- Germination: African Marigold seeds usually germinate within 5 to 7 days. The ideal soil temperature for germination is around 70-75°F (21-24°C).
- Thinning: Once the seedlings have grown a few inches tall and have several sets of true leaves, thin them out to maintain the recommended spacing between plants. This will give each plant enough room to grow and produce large, beautiful blooms.
- Location and Sunlight: African Marigolds thrive in full sun, so choose a spot in your garden that receives at least 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight per day.
- Watering and Care: African Marigolds are relatively drought-tolerant once established, but they benefit from regular watering during dry spells. Avoid overwatering, as it can lead to root rot. Mulching around the plants can help retain soil moisture and suppress weeds.
- Fertilization: African Marigolds do not require heavy fertilization. They can thrive in moderately fertile soil. If your soil is poor, you can apply a balanced fertilizer sparingly, but it’s often not necessary.
- Deadheading: To encourage continuous blooming, remove faded flowers regularly. Deadheading will also prevent the plants from going to seed prematurely.
- Pest and Disease Control: African Marigolds are generally resistant to pests and diseases. However, keep an eye out for any signs of pests or diseases and take appropriate measures if necessary.
