Once established, gaillardias are tolerant of drought. Both annual and perennial gaillardias are easy to grow from seed or you can buy perennial types as plants.

Timing: Gaillardia is best sown in the spring or early summer. In colder climates, you can start the seeds indoors about 6-8 weeks before the last expected frost date.
Prepare Containers: Use seed-starting trays or small pots with good drainage holes. Fill the containers with a well-draining seed-starting mix or a blend of potting soil, sand, and perlite.
Sow Seeds: Place one or two Gaillardia seeds in each container, about 1/8 inch deep in the soil. Gaillardia seeds require light to germinate, so avoid covering them with too much soil. Gently press the seeds into the soil to ensure good seed-to-soil contact.
Watering: Moisten the soil gently with water after sowing the seeds. Keep the soil consistently moist until the seeds germinate.
Germination: Place the seed trays or pots in a warm location with bright, indirect sunlight. Gaillardia seeds usually germinate within 7-14 days.
Transplanting: Once the seedlings have developed two to four true leaves and are large enough to handle, they can be transplanted into larger containers or directly into the garden. If transplanting outdoors, ensure the last frost date has passed.
Outdoor Planting: Choose a sunny spot in your garden with well-draining soil. Gaillardia thrives in full sunlight and tolerates hot and dry conditions. Space the transplants at least 12-18 inches apart to give them enough room to grow.
Soil and Fertilizer: Gaillardia prefers average to poor soil with good drainage. They are generally not heavy feeders, so avoid fertilizing excessively. However, adding some compost or well-rotted organic matter before planting can be beneficial.
Watering: While Gaillardia is drought-tolerant once established, it’s essential to keep the young transplants watered during dry periods to help them establish strong root systems.
Deadheading: To encourage continuous blooming and prevent self-seeding, deadhead spent flowers regularly by removing them at the base.
Winter Care: In colder climates, Gaillardia may require some winter protection. Applying a layer of mulch around the plants in late fall can help insulate the roots and protect them from severe cold.
