Time of Year: Start seeds indoors about 8-10 weeks before the last expected frost date in your region. This gives the plants a head start before moving them outside.
Container: Use small seed trays or pots with drainage holes to start the seeds.
Soil: Use a light, well-draining seed-starting mix. Peppers need soil that holds moisture but drains well to prevent root rot.
Plant Depth: Sow the seeds about 1/4 inch (6mm) deep into the soil.
Spacing: Space the seeds about 2 inches (5 cm) apart to give them room to grow.
Watering: Water gently after planting to moisten the soil. Keep the soil consistently moist but not soaking wet.
Temperature: Pepper seeds need warmth to germinate. Keep the soil temperature between 75°F to 85°F (24°C to 29°C).
Humidity: Cover the tray or pots with a clear plastic lid or plastic wrap to create a humid environment. Ensure there is some air circulation to prevent mold.
Light: Once germinated, provide plenty of light (12-16 hours per day) using grow lights or place them in a sunny window.
After about 6-8 weeks, when the seedlings have 2-3 sets of true leaves, it’s time to transplant them into larger containers or directly into the garden.
Harden Off: Before transplanting outdoors, gradually acclimate the seedlings to outdoor conditions by placing them outside for a few hours each day for about a week. This helps them adapt to direct sunlight and outdoor temperatures.
Outdoor Planting: Choose a location that gets full sun (at least 6-8 hours of sunlight daily). The soil should be rich, well-draining, and slightly acidic to neutral (pH 6.0 to 7.0).
Spacing: If transplanting into the garden, space the plants about 18-24 inches (45-60 cm) apart to allow for proper air circulation.
Watering: Keep the plants consistently moist, but avoid overwatering. Water deeply, especially during dry periods.
Fertilizing: Use a balanced fertilizer designed for vegetables, or a fertilizer with higher potassium and phosphorus to encourage fruiting.
Pruning: Prune the plants occasionally to remove dead or yellowing leaves and to encourage bushier growth.
Pests/Diseases: Keep an eye on common pests such as aphids and spider mites. Use organic methods or insecticidal soap to manage any issues.
7. Harvesting:
Fruit Ripening: Dangle No. 2 F1 Hot Peppers typically take around 70-90 days from transplanting to reach full maturity.
Harvest: When the peppers turn their mature color (usually bright red or orange, depending on the variety), it’s time to harvest. You can use scissors or pruning shears to clip the peppers from the plant.
