Growing tray or container (with drainage holes)
Growing medium (potting soil, coconut coir, or a specialized microgreens growing mat)
Spray bottle (for watering)
Light source (natural sunlight or grow lights)
Steps to Grow Kale Microgreens
Prepare the Tray:
Fill the tray with about 1-2 inches of your chosen growing medium.
Level the surface and lightly tamp it down.
Sow the Seeds:
Evenly distribute the kale microgreens seeds across the surface of the growing medium.
You can use a denser sowing pattern compared to regular gardening since microgreens are harvested young.
Press Seeds Lightly:
Gently press the seeds into the growing medium using a flat object or your hand. This ensures good seed-to-soil contact.
Moisture and Cover:
Use a spray bottle to mist the seeds and the growing medium. Ensure it’s damp but not waterlogged.
Cover the tray with a lid or another tray to create a dark, humid environment which helps with germination.
Germination:
Keep the tray covered for 2-3 days, misting the seeds once or twice a day to keep them moist.
After 2-3 days, the seeds should begin to sprout. At this point, remove the cover and expose the tray to light.
Light and Watering:
Place the tray in a well-lit area or under grow lights. Kale microgreens need about 12-16 hours of light per day.
Continue to mist the microgreens with water once or twice a day. Make sure they are moist but not soaking wet.
Growth and Harvesting:
Kale microgreens typically take about 7-14 days to grow to a harvestable size, which is when they are about 2-3 inches tall.
Harvest them by cutting the stems just above the soil level using scissors or a sharp knife.
Post-Harvest:
Rinse the harvested microgreens in cool water and pat them dry.
Store them in a container in the refrigerator if not consuming immediately.
By following these steps, you can enjoy fresh, nutritious kale microgreens at home. Happy growing!
